Pediatric Dentistry

At Lomita-Torrance Dental, we are dedicated to providing every dental care service your family needs in one convenient location. We are proud to offer pediatric dentistry with our award-winning specialist, Dr. Estelle Liou.

Why a Pediatric Dentist?

Many general dental offices offer children’s dentistry, so what’s the difference between them and us? After receiving her DDS, Dr. Liou continued her education, focusing her study on the unique dental needs of children. Her extra training makes her a true expert at treating children.

Your Child’s Unique Needs

Unlike adults, children’s mouths are constantly in a state of development. During their first years, their baby teeth are coming in, and then around age 6, those teeth start falling out to make way for their permanent teeth. In the meantime, their entire mouth is growing and changing.

Up until about age 8, your children will rely on you to teach them and coach them in their self-care routines. Even after they have developed the maturity and the coordination to brush and floss their own teeth, they will still need occasional supervision to make sure that they are continuing to practice good habits.

Children’s Dental Examinations

Many factors can influence the way your child’s mouth is growing. Even seemingly harmless habits like drinking from a bottle and sucking on a pacifier or thumb can have a long-term effect on their teeth. Losing teeth too early or too late can cause problems down the road as well.

As part of our pediatric dental examinations, Dr. Liou will monitor the way your child’s teeth are growing and provide recommendations. She will discuss important topics like nutrition and proper hygiene technique with you along with preventive treatment options like fluoride supplementation and sealants, when necessary. She completely understands that you want the best for your child and will work with you to create an ongoing treatment plan to help your child develop healthy habits.

Children’s Dental Emergencies

Emergencies are a part of life, and if your child has an injury involving the teeth and gums or wakes up with a very painful tooth, you want help fast. Our office offers same-day emergency appointments to relieve pain and treat the problem.

Since emergencies often happen outside of normal working hours, we also have a 24/7 on-call dentist available to answer questions and provide recommendations. If your child is in pain, don’t hesitate a moment. Call us right away.

One common situation that many parents don’t realize is an emergency is a child losing a baby tooth too soon, often because of injury. Baby teeth act as “placeholders” for the permanent teeth, and when one is lost too early, the other teeth may drift. The result could be permanent teeth coming in crooked, twisted, or behind other teeth, which could eventually lead to costly orthodontic bills.

If your child’s tooth has been chipped, broken, or knocked out, call us right away. We can assess the damage, treat the discomfort, and take x-rays to see where the permanent teeth are to determine our next steps.

We love treating kids at Lomita-Torrance Dental, and kids love coming here and seeing Dr. Liou. Please give us a call today to schedule your child’s appointment.
